The Passions of Middle-Aged Men
My Dear Princess and Dear Fellow,
I love my rice cooker. There, I said it.
After a rocky start to our relationship* I have decided that $50 is the best money I ever spent.
I have not yet gone bonkers with the rice cooker, trying out viral "one-pot" recipes or trying to cook chicken in there, but it is just a matter of time.
And today, I took the rice cooker out on a DATE.
Caro was okay with it. She also came on the date with me. We went to see Jefe and Manda. Manda has not been well lately and we thought we might be able to cheer her up by bringing a movie ("Sinners") and making them lunch (cashew chicken).
It went really well! They loved the movie AND the food!
Caro and Manda talked while Jefe and I bumbled about in the kitchen together with the women laughing at us. I told Jefe of my love for my rice cooker and then he produced HIS new love.
A VACUUM CLEANER
He then did a whole infomercial style demonstration of the vacuum cleaner for me. Showing how it switches power UP when it detects a difficult bit. He was giddy. It was almost like he was dancing with it. There was definite capering going on.
"And I haven't come to the best bit yet!" he beamed.
When you plug the vacuum cleaner back into its charging dock...
"It empties its OWN BAG!!" said Jefe, beaming like a proud parent.
It was impressive to be sure. But as I started frying up my chicken I started thinking about Jefe and myself. Two middle aged men, getting over-excited about appliances.
I cannot help but wonder what 25 year old me would have made of this.

* We all remember "Faulty Rice-Cooker-Gate" I'm sure.
