Tap And Dot
I got the ride-on mower out with a spring in my step looking forward to cutting the grass round the house. I stopped to open the gate and when I got back on couldn't get it into gear. :( The steering was already feeling a bit dodgy so I've arranged for it to be picked up by Ernest Doe of Fyfield again for repair.
I reverted to paperwork and found my diary from 1967, my final year at boarding school. I read it cover to cover. It was an education into how the mind of a girl that age works. The language I used sounds so archaic now and I was struck by how much time we all spent writing letters. When I visited home in June that year I was cutting the grass (and nettles) in our paddock, drove over something sharp and broke the mower. I found the similarity to what I'm doing now quite poignant.
The little moth on the left is a nettle tap, whose larvae love nettles and the one on the right is a straw dot, whose larvae love grass.
