Another day . . .
. . . and another 2 monasteries. Delayed from yesterday our first visit is to Tatev Monastery via the aerial cableway 'Wings of Tatev'. It is a 9th-century Armenian Apostolic Christian monastery located on a basalt plateau. It stands on the edge of a deep gorge of the Vorotan River. Gavazan is a 9 metre pendulous column, built in 906. What makes it unique is its ability to swing without collapsing so is able to give early warning of possible earthquakes.
Next stop is not a monastery - Areni-1.
On to Noravank Monastery. Best known for its two-storey Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) Church, where access to the second floor is by a very narrow, open stone staircase on the face of building. Needless to say it wasn't open.
