Not expecting to be here or to see this.
Tuesdays of half term breaks have a regular commitment which involve a longish train journey. It was quite possible this was the last time I'd be doing this particular trip, and I was unimpressed that I'd had to rethink the journey north, as the just after 9.00 a.m. train I'd been getting as far as Preston was not on the timetable anymore.
If you know your railway stations, you will know this is not Preston station. This is Crewe. I used to have to change here for trains to Chester during the six years I lived there, then on numerous other occasions in the subsequent years.
But, I've hardly ever had to change trains here in the last 15 years or so. Somehow, my mental map of Crewe station has been overwritten and I got myself in a fine muddle. I was sitting in a quiet corner recovering from my muddle, when this Pullman train went through.
As it turned out, even if I'd already been thinking about the longer term viability of continuing with this commitment (hence yesterday's Big Think), I didn't need to catastrophise about whether this was going to be another change foisted on me. It was well worth having the frank conversation about it all, but for now, it continues.
