Space Aliens!!

Sitting in the dentist waiting room I was flicking through a National Geographic in the company of a couple of teenagers with their wee baby. One of them was waiting for an appointment. The lad was also flicking through an NG. He looked up at his girlfriend, oblivious to me and whispered to her
"It would be really good for you if you learnt to read....". There was no malice or condescension in his voice.

I know nothing of her background, looked perfectly ordinary to me, but where have we went wrong where kids are leaving school without being able to read. I left a wee bit saddened.
