Look Out

Crime and Punishment

I needed some provisions - including something for dinner this evening - so headed to the nearest supermarket (in Leominster) this morning. On the way I decided to call in and have a look at the Priory, which I knew nothing about.

Walking in there was a service - a sung Eucharist - in progress. The interior was stunning, fabulously Norman in large part. I am not a church goer, but on being invited to join the congregation I thought - OK.

The service concluded with some announcements. Various things to do with the 900th anniversary of the founding of the Priory in 1125, where help is needed. And a request for members of the congregation to complete a form after the service on an issue of controversy where opinion is divided.

That controversy centres on the ducking stool, which sits in an aisle, (that’s it in the image) which it seems may be the only ducking stool anywhere in the world housed in a place of worship. It is in need of some repair, and that need has initiated the current debate.

After the service I went over to have a look at it - I’ve read about these, but never ever seen one. It’s big! The last use of one in England was in 1809 in Leominster, so I assume this is the instrument (see extra). It must have been a really painful form of public humiliation.

Looking around the church I chatted to a few people - canvassing their opinions. Some (men) talked about it being used on tradesmen who short changed customers, including watering down beer. It was suggested it might be a good idea to bring the instrument into operation again. But a lady I spoke to had a very strong opinion the other way - it was mainly women who it was used on and it should be removed from the Priory and housed somewhere else. Women wouldn’t nag if men did what they were told to do and did it promptly. That told me !

I’m curious to know what the outcome of the vote cum consultation is.
