Thank you for your wonderful kindness for yesterday’s blip.
I’m going to write about the day in detail for my own memory. Feel free to skip it.
Today started early at 5 and we were on the road by 6. It was perfect weather and I started singing
“oh what a beautiful morning
oh what a beautiful day
I’ve got a beautiful feeling
everything’s going my way”.
We made it to the hospital at 6:39 and the first song I heard was Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves - an excellent start. It took a while for everyone to get checked in but once that was over, it was pretty smooth sailing. I was put in bed 9, my lucky number; another good start. I thought it was very funny that they had a bed 12 and then a bed 14, reminding me of this and that.
A senior nurse came to check me in properly and introduced herself as Sister Joy, and she lived up to her name. I felt that she should have a song written about her.
I was told early on that I would be the last one taken in because I was younger and healthier than the others before me, which immediately made me feel better. I was taken in about 2 pm and woke up around 3:30. The surgeon said they got the growths out and that they were unusual but yes, probably cancerous. They’re off to the lab and I should hear in a few weeks.
I got back to the ward around 4 and was so well taken care of. Sister Joy welcomed me back, Leah the healthcare assistant brought me lunch and made me laugh and then a new nurse, Mimi, came in. She is French and we conversed happily in Franglais. Those three were angels.
Two of those three were immigrants to the UK, and later on I read the Michael Rosen poem about this so-called Island of Strangers. Thank heavens for the NHS and all the incredible immigrants that work in it (and takes such good care of this immigrant).
Tim came to pick me and instantly joined in the fun the nurses and I were having. We had an easy journey home and a quiet night. I’m tired but otherwise fine.
And I’m incredibly grateful to Tim, to the NHS and to friends all over. Thank you lovely blippers. Thank you.
