That Will Do!

All is not what it seems...

Edit 22.5.25
It seems a tragedy has occurred. There has been no activity in the box by the adults for several hours and they did not brood the chicks over the night of 21st - 22nd.and the chicks appear to have died.. We have no idea as yet how this happened. I have changed the main photo, put the original in extras and left the text by way of explanation. Needless to say I am distraught.

Original text:
Activities inside the birdbox are causing all sorts of concern to the humans watching the camera footage.

A sequence of events is represented by the four photos, starting with the bottom right when all is quiet, all six remaining chicks cuddled up together. So sweet.

Then the thumbnail, bottom left, one has struggled out of the nest cup and seems to be stranded (this a repeat of yesterday's escape, which was resolved in time).

Top left, another climbs out and appears to be comforting the lost chick face to face.

Next thing you know (top right) two others have made their way out and all huddle together - are they planning a return strategy or simply commiserating? What you don't see is the one that seemed so attentive at first, unceremoniously crawled right over the escapee, heading back to the nest.

At last, as in the beginning, bottom right again, they all make it back into the nest and fall sound asleep. And the human, who has been observing with trepidation, breathes a sigh of relief.

Now I understand why bird boxes are made so deep, otherwise this little prank would have left them in a heap on the ground - it was like watching kids escape their bedroom in the night and return to their bed before the parents are aware what's going on.

Maybe I'm getting too attached... .
