In Bruges 2
Taking a photo of the boats…later I was on a boat…the unashamed tourist.
We also went to see the Michelangelo sculpture in Bruges which has an interesting history. The Madonna of Bruges is the only Michelangelo sculpture to leave Italy in his lifetime.
Napoleon ordered it taken to Paris, and it was returned to Bruges after his defeat at Waterloo. Later, it fell into the hands of Hitler, and was rescued by The Monuments Men as part of the allies fine arts recovery mission.
We also visited the the Basilica of the Holy Blood. The church is best known as the repository of a venerated phial said to contain a cloth with blood of Jesus Christ. Quite a claim, but the church does allow close access to the relic, which must be a special moment for those with strong faith.
I would rather see the church venerating the architects, sculptors and artists that make these buildings so spectacular.
