Rounding it off
Our last day in Sorrento. Not sunny, but warm and still until mid-afternoon, when the promised light rain arrived just in time for our return to the hotel to do most of our packing. As a salute to the occasion, and because there was no pressure to be somewhere in the morning, I allowed myself some Prosecco to accompany my breakfast…
We spent the morning exploring the inland side of the main road through the city. A great find was the section of the ancient city wall which has been restored to allow visitors to walk the ramparts as the guards must have done, looking down onto orange and lemon grows inside and the road of flats outside.
Returning to the main road, I suddenly realised there was yet another church sideways on to the road and promptly found the door … of the Cathedral of Sorrento. It was massive - long, high, flat ceiling covered in paintings, a multitude of side chapels to pray for the souls of past clergy - mostly, I think, archbishops and the occupied. It seems strange to see the image and statues of someone - in this case St John Paul - whom you’ve seen on the telly…
After that, we felt the need of food (again) and found a corner site under awnings (we knew it was going to rain) where we were so delightfully served that we wished we’d found it earlier. Bruschetta to share, coffee in elegant little cups with matching lids because the actual pasticcieria was across the road and it had to be kept warm, tiny sponge cakes .. perfetto!
Now we’ve sort of packed; I’m showered; dinner will be soon. If I manage on the phone, I’ll post an extra of the cathedral.
