After deciding against plans A, B and C all of which involved driving, I set off on foot. Past Waterhead and up into Stagshaw Gardens (National Trust). It’s really woodland and I overheard one lady saying to her friend that she was expecting formal gardens.
I took the higher path past the Gunnera and Skunk Cabbage but it’s too early in the season - they have a lot of growing still to do. Then down to where I took the photo, stopping to sit on a bench for a while to see if I could spot any red squirrels. I didn’t.
Up again to the top gate, out into Skelghyll Woods and very slowly down a steep stony path. Then over 2 stiles (one each side of a field) and down loads of steps to Waterhead for a sit in the sunshine before taking the easy option of a bus back to the centre of Ambleside.
I would have enjoyed it more if I’d set off earlier.
