Book club read
Monday
Back to grey skies today, with rain in the afternoon. I spent much of the morning finishing my book for Book Club this afternoon, Lady Tan’s Circle of Women, by Lisa See, a historical novel inspired by the true story of Tan Yunxian, a woman physician in 15th-century China. After a bit of a slow start, it developed into an excellent novel, providing insights into the social and cultural context of 15th century China, including the traditional roles of women, the practice of foot binding, and the importance of family and marriage, and the importance of having a male heir.
Book Club was at Sidonie’s house, which I hadn’t been to before. It’s a beautiful home, and she keeps a lovely garden. She provided a lovely spread, a wonderful deep Brie with crackers, nuts, fruit salad, and blueberry scones baked by her husband! We enjoyed some sharing time, and a good discussion of the book, which was enjoyed by everyone. A delightful way to pass a wet afternoon.
Whilst I was at Book Club, our new fridge/freezer was being delivered, so I then spent quite a bit of time bringing everything up from our extra fridge freezer in the basement. I was disappointed to read online last night that magnets will not stick to many stainless steel refrigerators, depending on the exact composition of the stainless steel used. However, this evening I was happy to discover that most of my magnets do stick. I decided though, that I had accumulated too many magnets from our travels over the years, so I moved some of them to the downstairs fridge!
