Monday
We spent the best part of the day in Lacock. H&R visited the Abbey whilst Clive, Hetty and I went for a walk.
Almost as soon as we started our walk, we heard the bleating of a lone sheep. It did not shut up and was seemingly staring at us.
I stayed out of the way, with Hetty on her lead, as Clive approached because, clearly, something was afoot.
The sheep walked towards Clive, still baaing and bleating in distress.
Clive soon noticed a lamb, down the river bank, caught in the roots of a tree. He clambered down the bank, caught hold of the lamb but could not free the poor thing.
A couple of women crossed towards me and I told them what was happening so they joined Clive. They were also unable to free it. One of them called the National Trust Lacock office and a farmer was notified.
We think he just grabbed and pulled whereas Clive, now very bloodied and scratched, was more gentle.
Mother and lamb were reunited and joined the herd further downstream. Our good deed done.
William Henry Fox Talbot was a Pioneer of Victorian photography. He lived in Lacock Abbey and is buried in the village graveyard.
We've had another glorious day.
