Tartan
I was marshalling at the inaugural Edinburgh Tartan parade which was designed to "celebrate the Scottish culture, foster community engagement, and commemorate Edinburgh's significant 900th anniversary as a city". It was quite an incredible event, particularly considering the fact that the team pulling this off is only 6 volunteers - they had been to the New York Tartan Week and wanted to replicate this. One of these 6 people is a friend of mine from the rowing club so I had agreed to help as well as another couple of people from the club.
They had 1,600 participants from all over, including Chinese lion and dragon dancers, Viking “jarl squads” from Shetland, and of course, pipe bands and highland dance troops. They also managed to get Kyle Dawson the President of the National Tartan Day New York Committee as Grand Marshal, with Gail Porter who also hosted the concert in the Usher Hall in the evening. The parade was followed by a ceilidh in Princes Street Gardens in the afternoon and a concert in the evening at the Usher Hall.
Unfortunately, I couldn't attend the concert. Katya was looking after Django for me (I dropped him off in the morning before going to the volunteers briefing) but was going out in the evening so I needed to pick him up after the ceilidh. The ceilidh was fun! I took too many photos to include only one, and I hope it gives an idea of the varied weird and wonderful people taking part.
