VE Day 80

After watching the service of thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey, paying tribute to those who fought for their country during WWII, K and a family friend/elderly neighbour joined us for a VE Day 80 indoor picnic lunch, complete with Union Jack flags and Vera Lynn music. At 6.30pm I could hear the church bells ringing out, like churches all over the country. This evening we shall be watching some of the concert from Horse Guards Parade in London.

Today’s 80th anniversary celebrations have stirred up a lot of memories for Dad, albeit rather jumbled. To clarify matters, I dug out some old papers from when he did his National Service. To this day, he’s very proud of having once been a Royal Marine.
