Mud Race

A short walk to join the crowds to spectate at the Maldon Mud Race. We had quite a good view from near the barges ... helps being tall. Viv chatted for a short while and told us about the origins of the run; The pub on the Quay placed a barrel on the far bank. Customers were offered a free pint provided they crossed the river, drank the pint before returning ... The tradition was born! Originally in the holiday season between Christmas and New Year, and bitter cold. Now over 500 entrants, donating over £100 each to charity for the privilege  ..  a real community event and British madness at it's best.
