An evening with Inghne Bhuidhe
I drove miles to attend this pattern day at Inghne Bhuidhe's holy well (the fair-haired daughter, one of three saintly sisters ) in North Cork and what an enchanted evening it was. The sun shone, the site vibrated and the atmosphere was jolly yet devout. The small site, in the middle of a field, is surrounded by stone walls and most of the centre taken up by a gigantic hawthorn and copper beech so the space is friendly and compact inside. It's traditional to tie rags on the hawthorn and I was pleased to see many people still did this, and the well itself was getting a lot of attention - cure for sore eyes, rheumatism and men's ailments. All ages were in attendance, the priest focused on kindness and peace, and somehow tying ribbons in trees, sipping sacred water and chatting the chat in the May evening sunshine seemed just about the right thing to be doing.
I got home late fuelled by a punnet of strawberries and have had another big day today - I may have to catch up with that tomorrow .
