Planting Time!
Last week, when I was at the Arboretum, they were giving away packets of seeds inside the Glass House. I nabbed one of each of the ones I was interested in, and on this day, it was planting time!
I tidied up the original butterfly garden on the sunny southern side of the house. In the beginning, it had a variety of things growing in it. In latter years, it was mostly monarda.
The news from the monarda front is that they have gone rogue! My monarda are on walkabout. They have taken a stroll into the yard, and swelled well beyond the borders of the butterfly garden, those naughty things.
I had originally thought I'd transplant them all back into their original spot, but as I surveyed those migratory monarda, I realized the simplest thing to do would be to let them do whatever they want to do! I simply put little bits of fencing around them in their new spot. Voila! Problem solved!
The garden plot itself ended up sort of empty in spots. So I planted morning glory at the back (yes, I scarified and soaked them overnight first), and three kinds of sweet pea, and three kinds of sunflowers, of assorted heights. Then I watered it all, and put in some decorative things around it all, including a bunch of those colorful twisty stakes (in red and blue) that I liked from Ocean State.
Later in the day, we ended up at Walmart, and I bought two tomato plants ("better boy" variety), and planted them in pots as soon as I got home, with lots of help from LGK, of course. So that's the bulk of the planting, at least for now. There are some seeds I didn't plant yet (that bottom left set). Perhaps I will get to those tomorrow!
It is my custom to include a soundtrack song, and so here is Jakob Dylan, with Will It Grow. And as a bonus song, for my wandering monarda, I've got the Mamas and the Papas, with Go Where You Wanna Go.
