Sole Survivor
I spent some time in the birdhide at Kinghorn Loch.
The mute swan is still sitting on her nest right in front of the hide.
A little further away at the nearest coot nest, there is only one surviving chick. I have no idea what happened to the others.
The next coot nest has five younger chicks clamouring for food. I hope they have better luck.
Further news from inside the hide:
A month back, I bipped a queen wasp who was building a nest in a totally inappropriate spot between the shelf and the viewing window. While she was away, the nest was removed. Four days later, a new nest appeared just two inches away. That too was removed. It seemed that she got the message and went away . . . until now that is. A new nest was in virtually the same spot as the first! That too has been removed. I'll check back again in a few days time.
