Groovy rock on Carn Enoch

A ramble on the nearby mountain brought us to the rocky outcrop and ring cairn of Carn Enoch where this mysterious boulder sports an unsolved puzzle. What or who incised these deep grooves along several parallel cracks in solid stone?

Many theories have been proposed and argued: that they represent a lunar or tidal calendar (the sea is viewable nearby), that they were tally marks (for what?), record-keeping for travellers or pilgrims, Ogham letters that mean...well, nothing in point of fact, used for tool sharpening or simply the natural result of glacial sliding and squeezing. Much debate has ensued but the mystery remains.

On a simpler level, the semi-feral ponies that live up here were enjoying the fine weather, grazing among the rocks and heather. I counted maybe a dozen new foals among them, one of them snoozing endearingly in the sunshine (2nd extra) while the adults kept a sharp look-out, snorting and startling when they noticed me.
