The journey is over

Am a big fan of Robert Macfarlane's work - was a delight to hear directly from him at the Edinburgh Book Festival a few years ago - and am looking forward to reading his new book: 'Is a River Alive?', which was recently published ...

... so; been thinking on  rivers, beginnings & endings - and thus here's a snap of a favourite children's book of mine - River Story - and below are a few of the opening and concluding lines. It really is a wonderful book, with glorious illustrations on every page. Do buy a copy if you ever see it ;-)

RIVER STORY

All rivers have a beginning ...
High in the mountains
the snow is melting.
Trickles of water are running together,
bubbling through moss,
dripping down ledges,
coming together into a stream.

... the river reaches
the edge of the land,
waves wash the sand,
and fresh water meets salt water.

The sea birds are calling.
The sea winds are blowing.
The journey is over.
