Blind Boys of Alabama
Authentic riproaring gospel music from the Blind Boys of Alabama at Cheltenham Town Hall in today's late afternoon session. They are hardly boys, the group dates back to 1939, and the original members have long since passed. Despite their advanced years they gave a non-stop and energetic 90 minute show which included one of the 'boys' being led down from the stage, whilst singing, and taken up and down the aisles shaking hands with audience members. They gave a very moving version of 'Amazing Grace' to the tune of 'House of the Rising Sun'. It was a day of considerable musical contrast. Prior to the Blind Boys show I enjoyed a set of sophisticated Gershwin numbers sung by the accomplished jazz vocalist, Claire Martin (see extra), accompanied by her excellent backing group and guest musicians on saxophone and trumpet. The day ended with David Gray, of 'Babylon' and 'This Year's Love' fame, wowing a packed Big Top, the Festival's main arena. We have one more gig to go to tomorrow before heading for home.
