Waspish Tongue

I was about 6 inches away and it really didn't mind - obviously not feeling too waspish today - or just very hungry!

This common wasp was intently checking out the Eryngium in a pot on the terrace oblivious of the camera or unconcerned, let's put it that way. Climbing at a steady pace over the thimble like flowerhead atop the long branched stems, licking each individual stamen with it's tongue. I'd never seen a wasp tongue before! Unlike bees it has strong mandibles (thought to have evolved from the legs) for grasping and killing insects, cutting, building nests and a tongue for reaching the nectar and honeydew.

I spent most of last night awake trying to get a few any shots of the meteors which were going to be prolific - showering over us in a clear sky. I did see quite a few - then I should have - between midnight and three o'clock in the morning!!! The camera even on a very wide angle couldn't cover the entire sky and the number of totally worthless shots was ridiculous! I did manage get a couple of meteors but they were so faint and just totally unblippable. I bet some blipper out there has had more success than me!

Waspish with lack of sleep perhaps :))
