The highest station in France
I passed this model of the little yellow train outside Bolquère station, at 1,592 metres the highest station in France. The train is now mostly a tourist train but for a long time provided a lifeline connecting the high plateau of the Cerdangne with the plain below. It was a considerable feat of engineering when the line was built in the early 20th century. There have been attempts by SNCF to shut the line which have been met with fierce resistance.
I played the second day of the tennis tournament. Playing at 1,896 metres is more physically demanding and the balls fly a little differently through the thin air. I won my first match against a good but inconsistent player and lost my second match against a relative newcomer who returned everything and chased down all my supposed winners. I later learnt that he was recently a French biathlon champion which just might explain his level of fitness!
