Botany Bay
We had a free day today except we had arranged to pick Helen up from the airport at 1:30. So we decided to explore some parts of Sydney on that side of the harbour and collect her on the way back.
We went to Kurnell, the site of Captain Cook's landing in 1770. It was an impressive spot. Very quiet and some nice monuments.
We had morning tea at a little cafe there and struck up a conversation with an interesting couple our age originally from Wales. They told us the nice jetty was built by a government department a few years ago but they couldn't get anyone to take up the ferry operations so it's a now handy spot for a bit of recreational fishing!
Picking up Helen was a bit of a saga. The airport is cunningly designed to create maximum inconvenience and expense for the public. After one circuit we figured she would have landed so entered the Express Pickup area when you can stay for 15 minutes before being hit with exorbitant parking fees. Big error. We found you can only enter once a day and having ascertained she had only just landed we exited and circled the airport about 8 times till we were able to collect her just outside. I'm not sure we didn't pay more in diesel than we would have for parking. For the climate conscious, ponder the emissions and weep.
We dropped her home and saw the twins briefly. They had stayed home from day care but looked pretty well recovered to me.
