It is a while since I added to my collection of sundials so here is one at Amisfield Walled Garden at Haddington. This sundial is a three half-ring armillary sphere on an ornate white baluster pedestal with Roman hour numerals and possibly dates from the time that the garden was built in the 1780s. The Earl of Wemyss wanted to impress people of his wealth with the elaborate designs of the buildings and plants and sundials were very popular.
After Amisfield House was demolished in 1928 the garden had a variety of uses and eventually was overgrown by trees after an unsuccessful attempt as a tree nursery. Now it has been taken over by the community with many volunteers developing it based largely on the designs of the original garden. It includes espaliered apples and an orchard, fruit and vegetable beds, extensive herbaceous borders, and a small pond.
