Brean Down
When booking accommodation for my break my plan for today was to either visit the Cheddar Gorge or Glastonbury. However the continuing summer-like weather saw me heading to the coast instead.
Brean Down is a National Trust owned headland between Weston-super Mare and Burnham-on-sea. I spent the morning on the sandy beach at around high tide and soon discovered that this is one of those beaches where the tide seems to go out for miles very quickly!
For the afternoon I slapped on the sun cream, took the steep path up (320ft height gain overall) the the cliff top and walked out along the headland to the ruined Palmerston fort and back, around 3miles.
To my surprise the rugged downland hosted bluebells, though they were at the end of season, but the butterflies were still enjoying them. I was also pleased to sea the thrift coming into bloom (extras).
However it was the views across the Bristol Channel which really took my eye. I especially liked the view across to the Birnbeck Pier in Weston-super-Mare. It was very hazy and bright which leant itself to my high-key image.
