Life's Little Moments

Aptly named

Sometimes you have to wonder who came up with some of the bird names, but then you come across one like this and you nod and say to yourself, that makes perfect sense.  Rose Breasted Grosbeak.  He was busy eating sunflower seeds at the feeder while an epic battle between two male bluebirds was happening in the garden, unfazed by them or me.  Not knowing if he'll hang around a few days or head off in search of breeding territory, I decided to grab a few shots today.

The battle between the bluebirds was not anything I've seen before - they were literally rolling around in the grass trying to claw and peck each other while the female stayed nearby.  Eventually a victor emerged and then both he and the female spent some time on an unclaimed box in the backyard.  I am not sure what's taking them so long to commit to a nest box, although maybe it has to do with the rival male.  One shot in Extra showing them in their full fury.  Last week I witnessed a big chase through the woods, but I've never seen them tumble about on the ground like this.  Meanwhile the swallows are keeping a tight watch on the other nest box in that area - I need to check tomorrow to see if they've started constructing their nest.

In other nesting news, Hubs discovered a robin nest in a big tree next to our driveway.  It seems like they are probably sitting on eggs, but I will get my handy little mechanic's mirror and have a look tomorrow.  Shaping up to be a good nesting season here.

Jax is having a fun day at day care.  They put him with a new playmate today, a female doberman.  The pictures would indicate a great time being had by both, culminating in treats.  I am sure he will sleep soundly tonight.

Lots of migrants showing up now - early morning in the yard is a symphony.

xoxo
