My neighbour’s wisteria
Isn’t it wonderful! I had a day without fixed commitments so I tried to get lots of chores done.
In fact I did more gardening than anything else, which is a pleasure rather than a chore. I planted my tomato plants out. And planted up various seedlings - hellebore, borage, violets - for the upcoming hospice shop plant sale. I also set up my propagator to start off courgettes, butternut squash, and some sunflowers too.
Also started to clear a circle of ground under the apple tree. At Kew a few days ago I learned that the new idea for keeping trees healthy and happy is to clear all weeds, dig over the compacted ground, add some mulch, and not walk under the tree. Apparently this was discovered at the time of the 1987 hurricane - trees growing in disturbed ground did much better. Then a research project showed that the care described above really does help. So I’m busy giving my apple tree the best care I can.
