Living my dream

By Mima

You don't need them until you need them

On Sunday evening when I was feeling my worst, my relief was nevertheless palpable when an ambulance arrived at the gate and paramedics took over my care.

From then on I knew I'd be okay.

I had never been in an ambulance before, let alone had one called out for me. Nor had I been admitted to an ED until Sunday night. I have been fortunate.

The entire experience - from the care point of view - was excellent. The calm competence and confidence of the medics enveloped me in a feeling of safety.

As I said to one of the ambulance crew who I happened to bump into 12 hours later, at the end of her shift and when I was on my (wobbly) feet again, "I didn't know how much I needed you, until I needed you."

As soon as I got home I took out a membership of Hato Hone St John Ambulance, which puts a few dollars into their coffers and which ensures should I need them again it won't cost anything (the standard call out here costs $98). It is a charity, and like many it runs on a shoestring. And yet these are essential first responders... employing highly skilled people to do a job keeping people alive (and which I wouldn't have the stomach for).

Until now I have taken them for granted. No more.

I continue to mend, although I have done next to nothing again today. Thankfully I have been able to read my book, for the first time in days. But my eyes are still struggling with the glare of screens for some reason. Hence my inability to look at your journals. I really hope I'll be back chatting with you very soon.

We had a small walk through the very autumnal (and chilly) village this afternoon. Bean is being a bit short-changed this week.

Love you all...
