A grassy mound

This is the effect a heavy umbrella stand has had on the patch of lawn on which it has sat since it arrived a couple of weeks or so ago. The stand has a dome shape but I hadn't particularly appreciated it was hollow otherwise how has the grass formed into this mound? We've now moved the umbrella stand to the patio when it's not on the lawn.
