Erkkilänsilta Bridge is leaving
They are going to take down the Erkkilän silta bridge, one of Tampere's landmarks, because it has became too narrow and too low for the raiway yard below. It may be taken to another location for pedestrians in the future, maybe to Näsisaari.
Erkkilä Bridge connects Jussinkylä and Tammela areas. It is a langer beam bridge, where the load-bearing structure is an arch and a stiffening beam, on which the arch rests. The name Erkkilä comes from Erkkilä farm house and Erkkilä village that was located near the Tampere main fire station ~1400 - early 1800.
The bridge has now been cut off and raised. Next they will build a steel working platform under it, and the concrete deck of the old bridge will be sawn into parts. Demolition of the langer beam bridge will begin in mid-May. The bridge will be laid on a constructed scaffold and then its arch will be demolished.
The new bridge won't be as distinctive as this light blue arch.
