Furniture
When we were first married, we had very little money. We had all on to first rent and then buy a house, there was no spare cash for furniture. We did manage though to furnish at least one house, and probably several more later, with what can only really be called junk. We did have some pieces given to us from the family, but most of it we got from the Salesrooms in Bradford. We would go at the end of the Auction Day, when all the antiques and good stuff had gone, and have great fun bidding alongside the people buying to furnish rental property etc. We actually got some reasonable, if not always very sensible, stuff.
Then more modern, cheaper-priced stores came along, MFI and of course IKEA and we started replacing our old junk with new junk. It was amazing to think back how we spent such a lot on appliances, such as washing machines, and techie stuff such as computers, but were very reluctant to spend much on furniture. As long as we had enough book shelves, we didn't seem to be that worried about anything else.
In more recent years we have actually bought some better furniture, real wood even! We like a company called Barker and Stonehouse, which has outlets in the north of England. However, we do keep to their more modest ranges and like to shop in the sales. Today we went to Darlington to collect two dining chairs – leather and real wood no less. And I have a suspicion that the chairs they are replacing, and which we will at last get rid of, are two that came from the Sales Rooms, so long ago.
Sorry, I have missed the Filterama challenge. I have enjoyed looking at everyone else’s entries though. Next week for definite.
