Reflections at Old Cromwell Town
The Walking Group headed south to Lowburn, where we parked our cars and walked to Old Cromwell Town. The white building on the right has an interesting history.
The Cromwell Athenaeum Hall
To Tender March 1874
Opened December 1874
Athenaeum Trust established 1875
Library and Reading Room (paid for by an illegal loan
as the Trust was not empowered to borrow)
added 1875-1886
Used extensively as a Ballroom and Picture Theatre.
Played a central role in the
'Made in New Zealand' Exhibition, 1931, organised to
raise money for local unemployment funds.
Cromwell Museum 1963 - 1985
Taken for 'Generation of Electricity' 1987
Partially demolished.
It was a beautiful day for a walk, nice cloud layer, lovely calm lake and great company. Had a cuppa on the way home at the Pisa Moorings Cafe
