Tute Hill motte, Cockermouth.
Motte castles are medieval fortifications introduced into England by the Normans. They consisted of an earth mound with a wooded tower on top, surrounded by a defensive wall.
Tute Hill motte was constructed in the early 12th Century. It was superseded by the present Cockermouth Castle which has a commanding view over the river Derwent.
Silly me! I should have saved yesterday's blip of 'egg on toast' ( or, perhaps 'egg sandwich' ) for today...Silly Saturday !!!
