Altar

This seems suitable somehow for the day that's in it. I was heading into the post and coming home I noticed something you can't normally see and decided to investigate! Yes, in a field amongst a lot of blackthorn bushes, a huge amount of bracken and brambles -  I spotted some stone! This is the remains of an old Mass House, actually very important as not many remain. It usually  languishes under bracken etc but someone had cleared around it and I could get a good look. Mass Houses date from the late 1700s when the rules re worship for Catholics were lightening and small barn-like thatched buildings were being put up - previously all worship had been illegal and held furtively in the open air, often at holy wells.  It is a long skinny building, the walls pretty sturdy and what is most touching is the altar, still remaining. . A few extras which will be vanishing shortly,
Other than that, it's been family history - exhausting but fascinating.
And I'm glad I didn't go up the mountain for it's been a murky damp sort of day, not as bad as forecast but, a  5 hour pilgrimage would not have been a lot of fun -though I guess that's not the point! I bet some hardy souls sallied forth.
And my camera keeps on messing around with the date, I seem to be a day behind. Blip Central will think I'm cheating - as if!
Happy Easter to those who celebrate it.
