Frog crossing
They are in fact frogs not toads crossing their road in tens in the evening and at night. We even have volunteers in yellow coats and torches taking turns surveying the road when darkness falls. Usually they find about 14 alive frogs and perhaps one or two squashed by cars. The migration is from a pond in someone's back garden but where they going no one knows, perhaps a ditch which flows into a stream at the bottom of our farm. The season lasts several weeks and it happens every year.
