Birsay Bay

Needed to check out the route for a walk from Birsay Bay to Marwick head. One I’ve done many times but always good to walk it once before the season starts.

Sun filled day with a biting wind and squally showers dashing past. The walk up the cliffs was a bit of a slog with the wind in my face all the way. Managed to find myself a sheltered spot at the top to eat my lunch, do some sketching and watch the birds nesting on the cliffs. Lots of fulmar, a few guillemots but I think they may just be starting to nest now. Quite a few gannets about, those are some of my favourite birds. So graceful.

The walk back to Birsay was a bit easier as it’s mostly downhill but of course the wind direction had switched just to make it a bit harder going.

Even though Birsay village was busy I never saw a soul on the walk, apart from some folk in the distance up at Marwick Head.
