"Thine Humble Beast"
It being Palm Sunday I took a walk down the field with GK Chesterton's The Donkey running through my head. The donkeys were outside the barn at the horse sanctuary but had their heads down feasting on some lovely fresh hay.
The donkey is a sign of humility and in Christianity it has been said to be almost a symbol of Christ himself, given how patiently it suffers and bears others' burdens. Horses on the other hand tend to be associated with royalty, power and war. The Germans have a word palmesel which means palm donkey.
While I was photographing the donkeys I noticed some black fungi on a tree trunk. These Alfred's cakes are so called because they resemble the cakes that Alfred burnt. (Extras.)
PS I saw ducklings scooting around on the lake through the hedge.
