The name of Stinking Hellebore (Helleborus foetidus) is an unfortunate one as it smells only when crushed and smells of wet dogs, hence the alternative name of Setterwort. I noticed two large plants growing on a wooded hilly slope in January when the flowers were emerging above its evergreen leaves and now there are many pale green flowers. They droop down starting in a tulip shape with a maroon tinged rim then open up later to an umbrella shape. The plant is native but rare and more common in southern England but few have been recorded in Scotland. They are similar, but slightly different to the cultivated green hellebores,
