That’s About As Spring As You Can Get

It’s glorious in the backyard! All the flowers are poised to explode their colors, tender shoots are poking out of the ground, trees are leafing and flowering and even setting fruit. We worked hard out there this morning. Mr S loaded all the trimmings from yesterday’s kiwi project in the little pickup truck, ready for the landfill. I pulled weeds and trimmed and swept. Our garden wizard helper, D, cleared out most of the invasive grasses, planted some flowers, shoveled dirt around, raked and trimmed and organized. What a team! we got a lot done, and at least two of us were tired. I spent the afternoon reading in the garden and taking a little nap; I finally got a flat comfortable chaise for that very purpose. Sleeping with birdsong and the hum of bees and the gentle smell of apple blossoms is a magic revival.

D is the only gardener I know who appreciates gophers. When I see a new mound, my immediate reaction is a combination of anger, disgust and revenge. She, however, exclaims, “Oh look at all that nice fresh dirt! Let’s use it somewhere!”.
