Roman Amphitheater all lit up
Being the first capital of Roman Gaul, Arles boasts in having the largest amphitheater in France. It dates back to 90 AD and was inspired by the Colosseum in Rome. It could seat 20,000 spectators.
Besides its dimension, it has two other particularities. It has an oval arena and is topped by four towers. At the fall of the Roman Empire, it served as a fortress and many houses were built between its 120 arches. Locally, the towers are known as Tours Sarrazines and served as defenses from potential invaders.
Tonight, the Roman monument seemed to revive to its old glory as there was a horse show parade that attracted many visitors.
Usually, the amphitheater is shown in daytime. But you don't often see it all lit up at night.
