Waste not, want not....
It all started with a tub of soured cream. I'd bought it a week or so ago to go with some chilli we were going to get out of the freezer, but we ended up eating something else instead. It was getting dangerously close to its 'use by' date and I didn't want to waste it. Then I spotted the remains of a pack of chives that needed to be used up, and that gave me the idea.
The self-raising flour had an expiry date of next month and the baking powder was already about three months out of date. The cheddar cheese had been open a week or so and needed using and the butter? That was well in date. A small pinch of mustard powder and half an hour later I had these cheese and chive scones waiting to be eaten, with lots of things used up rather than thrown away.
It worked out well as we needed an early lunch so we could leave the house early for W's final appointment in Norwich. Pretty much a 'tying up loose ends' appointment; she's fully signed off and been given the appropriate medication. All she needs now is an annual check-up for the next five years so we are both pretty happy with where we are.
