Grumpy Old Man

Honey come back

Hampton may be 500 miles away from Oban, but it’s pretty warm here today. Even in the shade it’s 19 degrees and where we’ve been sitting in the sun it was 33. That’s the chilly climate of the west of Scotland for you!

Spent most of the day catching up with ‘office work’, difficult when it’s so good outside. I eventually went out and watered all my pots and some of the recently moved shrubs. Apparently we’re due two or three more days of sunshine, then rain for a week or more.

I’ll need to start going through my photographs - I took between 7 and 8 hundred while I was away.  I’ll miss the opportunities for some different Blips and today I’m back to a plant in the garden. This is Euphorbia mellifera, a shrub known as the Honey Spurge and native to Madeira and the Canary Islands. I have Blipped it before. It’s supposed to tolerate temperatures down to -5 degrees, but we suffered much more than that at Arduaine and I don’t remembers it being damaged.  It enjoys sunshine in a well-drained spot and grows fairly rapidly to 2-3 metres.  I recall it seeding around too - my plant is an Arduaine seedling. Well worth trying.
