MARSH EDUCATION

It's Mono Monday and the theme is "Natural World"...today we have some learning going on.
~
In Sheboygan County we have a very large cattail marsh and there's a Learning Center for Marsh Education located there.  School children visit the marsh at all times of the year and take advantage of the learning opportunities that exist.
~
In the Springtime, a few weeks before school lets out for the summer, grade school kids from all schools in the county visit Monday through Friday.  They spend the whole day learning various things about the marsh from food webs to migrating waterfowl.
~
They net fish, insects, amphibians and whatever else they can find and there are adult teachers there to explain what they have found and how it fits into the marsh's ecosystem.
~
Here, an adult leader is sampling marsh soils and explaining about texture, nutrients and how only certain plants can grow here.  The soils are passed around and most kids are eager to touch each sample....but some don't like the "dirty" experience.  They are pretty tired on the bus ride back to school.
