ARCHAEOLOGY

They're planning to build some four-storey apartment blocks on this waste land between the railway and the promenade which the chap I talked to while I was taking this was very fed up about, as the buildings will block his sea view and early morning sunlight. At present he sees the sunrise over the sea. I'd be upset too. The contractors have uncovered this structure, and made it really difficult to photograph with a high wire fence they've erected along the back of the prom, with gaps that are too small to poke a lens through. According to old maps this was the site of railway engine sheds, so presumably the circular structure is the base of a turntable, although my acquaintance said he'd heard the theory that it could have had something to do with grain storage or a windmill. Hmmm, I'm sceptical, although I can't find a legible map online that shows what was there before the railway. He turned out to be not only a professional photographer who was operating a drone and therefore unhindered by the fence, but also an ex-blipper from some ten years or so ago, although I failed to ask for his name.
