Bison herd
A slightly later start this morning at 5.45. Jan and Mark had spotted wolf scat on the road and railway tracks last night so the intention was to return to that area to see the wolves in daylight; they remain active until a couple of hours after sunrise. We were out of luck, despite the presence of fresh scat. A large, eleven, breeding herd of bison was our reward for the dawn start. They stay around the meadows, like the wolves, a for a while in early morning daylight.
Back to the lodge for a 9 o’clock breakfast, various meats, excellent creamy scrambled egg, and a sort of doughnut flat bread dusted in icing sugar which we ate with cherry jam, and the usual instant coffee.
Back out in the van at 10, we drove to Czarna and in heavy rain we walked along the river San for several kilometres looking for bear, wolf and bison tracks which we found, all leading down to the river. There’s a hide with eco facilities for people who have the patience to wait for a bear to cross the river. Six days on average.
Soaking wet we managed to dry our kit, the rooms are very comfortable with underfloor heating in the bathroom that’s like walking on really hot concrete, super efficient for drying out boots in a couple of hours. I managed a short nap before lunch/dinner at 4.
A shorter night safari which also featured bison, the same herd in a different place. Waiting for other mammals in the amazing twilight was no hardship. It was quite misty so any chance of seeing a lynx was minimal. Eating a picnic supper in the van, scooped up from breakfast, we returned around 11pm. Tomorrow will probably be our last chance to see the lynx.
