In Memory

Needed some shopping today so took the opportunity to do a walk around the edge of Stowmarket first. The Paupers' Graveyard, used by the local workhouse and its infirmary, was just off our main path so we revisited it (I Blipped it back in 2021) and actually met one of the volunteers who look after the site. We remarked that the site had continued to improve and the volunteer was more than happy to talk about the history and the work which had been carried out. Apparently a local student, Julie Johnson, had carried out research for a dissertation for her Master's degree and had collated the names of around a hundred people who had been buried in the graveyard between 1813 and 1835 from the few records still in existence. The parish council then helped to raise funds for a memorial and for various interpretation boards. With the additional maintenance work which has been carried out the whole area is becoming a peaceful haven, protected from the encroaching housing estates.
