Drone Fly

It has been an extremely busy day in the garden. I’m whacked, and nursing an achy back.

Late March and early April the drone flies are patrolling over the back lawn. They hover statically over the grass at about head height, and then dart off at speed for no apparent reason. There does seem to be aerial combat between flies too. It must be part of some breeding display, maybe it’s the fly equivalent of rutting stags.

They are impossible to photograph in flight (I’ve tried). But I was able to catch this one at rest on the Ivy. The Ivy covered fence is attracting a lot of insect interest at the moment - various bees, wasps and flies.

Despite the fact all hard surfaces have been power-washed today by S - leaving a lot of mess which it has taken me ages to clear up - I haven’t managed a themed wet shot. Never mind.
