Kanazawa

Today we had a long journey from Hiroshima, down in the south west of Honshu, Japan’s main island  to Kanazawa almost on the North coast.

It involved 3 train journeys which all connected well, except for the fact that I hadn’t realised that we needed to book seats for the middle one, which meant we had to stand for an hour and a half in the corridor. On the plus side there were fine views of the enormous Lake Biwa to distract us, though I think they would have been better sitting down!

We arrived late afternoon and headed off to the old Geisha district, a much quieter version of that in Kyoto where, after wandering around admiring the old merchant houses, we had dinner of pork and shrimp rice bowls in another locals restaurant, admiring the deft skills of the elderly chef who was keeping 4 frying pans on the go at once.

I took this photo from outside the restaurant when we came out. It is decidedly chilly up north!
